Job hopping is a phenomenon that is prevalent in workplaces all over the world. The HR/People Strategy function of every organization associates this new trend with Millennials and Gen Z who have shifted to multiple companies in a short span of time. After exhibiting the same phenomenon, I have pondered over the root cause of the problem and came to the conclusion that there are certain things that every millennial and Gen Z wants in an organization. I have listed the top 10.
1. Smooth onboarding process:
Every millennial and Gen Z wants an understanding about the key role and responsibilities at the start. In addition, the processes (SOPs) that are needed to start the work immediately should be inculcated at the very beginning.
2. Work focused on impact:
Impact here means anything that brings a positive outcome.
3. Flexible work policy:
The opportunity to work from home is a dream for every millennial and Gen Z.
4. Clear Objectives and Key Results (OKRs):
Management by Objective warrants clear and unambiguous OKRs set with the consent of millennials.
5. Transparent Appraisal Process:
If promotions are rewarded on the basis of personal liking and disliking of the Manager, then a young employee is bound to leave the organization.
6. Growth Opportunities:
If an average manager in the organization stays in the same position for 7 years, then millennials and Gen Z will leave after working for a year.
7. Market Driven Salary:
Organizations give lower salary to young employees with the pretext that they are imparting valuable training. However, market-driven compensation can maintain morale and avoid dissatisfaction.
8. Culture that shuns Work Overload and Overtime:
Work-life balance is a goal for every young millennial and Gen Z. They will be happy to join an organization that discourages late hours and work overload.
9. Appreciation from line manager:
Gone are the days when monetary compensation alone can motivate employees. Appreciation from line manager is direly need to sustain a position in a high-pressure work environment.
10. Direct and frequent feedback:
Every young employee strives to work under a boss who highlights growth opportunities and guide the employee to improve his/her skills and abilities.
